Autism is a neurological disorder that primarily affects an individuals ability to communicate and interact socially. It is isolating by nature. Many children with autism are unable to speak or communicate their most basic needs or desires effectively. Even children who acquire language are often isolated due to poor social skills and unusual behaviors and interests.
It is currently estimated that 1 in 68 children is affected by autism. This figure has grown exponentially over the past 10 years. Many experts consider the rapid rise in the incidence and prevalence of autism to be an epidemic. If you do not currently know a child with autism, you probably will soon. Autism is considered a life long disability for which there is no known cause or cure.
